Caring for baby clothes

5 TIPS + 1 TRICK FOR CARING FOR BABY CLOTHES

Nothing is as delicate and deserves as much care as a baby’s skin. Protecting it also means taking precautions.

Some external factors can lead to dryness or irritation of your skin:

    • Pool chlorine
    • Excessive bath time
    • Sudden changes in temperature
    • Heating / Air conditioning
    • Sea salt / Beach sand
    • Use of inappropriate soaps

For all these causes, there are natural remediesthat will resolve any alteration that occurs in the child’s dermis.

However, the most important thing, because it is something we do every day, is to wash the baby’s clothes, taking all possible measures so that contact with the baby’s skin feels like a caress.

5 tips for caring for baby clothes

Many allergies, itching and dermatitis result from the contact of certain products with the baby’s skin, because their immune system is not yet fully developed. To avoid this situation, we recommend:

      1. During the first six months, it is advisable to separate your baby’s clothes from those of the rest of the family.
      2. Wash selectively using a specific neutral detergent, a detergent for baby clothes.
      3. And be careful, an important recommendation is to wash all clothes that come into contact with the baby. This includes, in addition to clothing and underwear, sheets, towels and large forgotten items, stuffed animals and toys.
      4. It is also necessary to wash recently purchased clothes. Clothing may have accumulated dust or bacteria imperceptible to the naked eye and should be disposed of.
      5. On the other hand, fabrics are often treated with chemical dyes and anilines whose residues will only be removed after washing at home. Be sure to sanitise your child’s clothes. Consider it an essential action.

Hand wash or machine wash?

Washing of baby clothes can be doneby hand or using the washing machine.. We recommend that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions. But always use adetergent for baby clothes, a neutral detergent or an ecological detergent for delicate clothes.

In addition, take into account the following recommendations:

      • Before hand or machine washing, soak the garment in lukewarm water, ideally at 35 degrees if the fabric allows it.
      • Hand wash: Rinse several times before completing the process. It is important to remove any detergent residue.
      • Machine wash: if you have few baby clothes to wash, you can use a short wash program, for delicate clothes and a gentle spin.
      • It is preferable that the rinse cycle is double.
      • Stubborn stains can be treated by hand washing with warm water and neutral detergent, followed by machine washing.

Is it possible to use the dryer?

Drying baby clothes in the dryer is one of the most common formulas because it guarantees speed, especially when temperatures are cold.

It’s best to do this for about 15 minutes, leaving the clothes a little damp so they can complete the process in the open air. This will prevent them from shrinking.

If you don’t have a dryer, hang your baby’s clothes outside in the open air. The sun’s rays will act as a natural disinfectant. (link to July post: Drying Your Clothes in the Sun)

What can damage baby’s skin and why?

Many parents are unaware of the reasons why the use of certain washing products is not recommended.

Here are a few so that your baby’s delicate skin is not put at risk.

      • Bleaches and stain removers: these contain chemicals.
      • Fabric softeners: they are added after rinsing and their residues can cause allergies and irritation.
      • Excess detergent: remember that it does not make the laundry cleaner, so calculate the dosage carefully, otherwise the excess may not be disposed of properly.
      • Powerful detergents: they are too aggressive for washing baby clothes and the risk of impregnating the fibres is high. Always use a neutral detergent, adetergent for sensitive skin.

Our grandmother’s tip

It is said that necessity is the mother of invention, so many grandmothers had to invent remedies for stains.

One of these formulas is used to remove milk stains. All babies tend to spit up after taking the bottle. A classic remedy: water with lemon.

Boil water with a few slices of lemon and, before washing, soak the garment for an hour.
